Ya, its important to find a game you win at and that you like to play too. I'm a sng player but if I play cash game than I'll be lucky to break even.

I started with free bankrolls, you should try them out. Than you won't feel bad if you lose the whole thing and just move on to the next bankroll.

"For me, I’m only really interested in cash games"

Yeah, you're a pro at those from what I've seen on your blog. I do ok at cash games, but they make me so nervous for some reason... Also, it's weird for me to play without a set 'end' in my mind. How do you determine when to stop?

Wow- this is great advice... You know, I've never explicitly thought about this and it makes complete sense. I do enjoy the big MTT's, but I had a lot of success at the low stakes SnG's. I'll really have to think about this- thanks for the advice!

"Realistically I don’t think you need to be able to beat the 0.01/0.02 tables at Stars before playing the 0.05/0.10, but I do think you need to be able to beat the 0.05/0.10 tables before you try the 0.25/0.50 tables."

That's the thing. I do great at the .05/.10 tables and $1 SnG's -- I just feel like it's not worth the time...

Problem is, I totally suck at the higher levels!

Brooklyn has made a great point. When I first started I was always worrying whether I should be playing this game or that game, whether I should play cash or tournaments etc.

It takes lots of discipline, but It think you need to find one you like and then stick with it, and focus all your time on that, at least for a while, I would say around 6 months. After that you should have a solid idea whether you actually like what your doing, if not you can try another game or another discipline until you find something your prepared to commit most of your poker time to.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that different formats and different games will help you become a better player, but I think its a lot more important to become proficient at one before you branch out.

For me, I'm only really interested in cash games, I'd like to play some tournaments, but all my focus is in full ring cash. Eventually I'd like to branch out a little into PLO or 6 max, but until I'm really confident in my game and my bankroll as grown to a high enough level, I feel all my time is best put into the one format, and for me thats NLHE FR cash games.

Hey, how you doing?

I'm on a similar goal but $0 - $100,000 is my goal right now. Maybe $0-$1,000,000 for my lifetime goal:)

I'm at about $2400 or so. Wasn't easy..many hours wasted but I like to play.

I was having a tough time on the 9-10 man sit and gos than I tried the 10 man heasup sit and gos. Have you tried those? Top 5 places double their money.

I think you should try some free bankrolls. Basically, pokerroom gives you $50 or whatever to play at their poker room and you must pay $50 or so in rake before you cashout. I have some listed on my blog if you're interested.

Keep your blog updated:) And check out my blog http://geneyuss.blogspot.com/search/label/Poker%20Blog

You're really at a very common situation, having difficulties/loss of patience with low stakes and thinking that it would be nice to be playing higher stakes where there aren't so many bad players.

Realistically I don't think you need to be able to beat the 0.01/0.02 tables at Stars before playing the 0.05/0.10, but I do think you need to be able to beat the 0.05/0.10 tables before you try the 0.25/0.50 tables. There's so much in terms of poker essentials that you need to get under your belt, and it's much cheaper to do so at $10 tables than at $50 tables. Plus, if you don't have these essentials, it may look straightforward at the higher levels, but you'll get eaten alive. It's players like that that are feeding the regs. The same applies to whether you're playing $1 tournies verses $10 tournies.

And people like to think that they, or someone that they're advising, is "hurting their game" by playing at play money tables or at low stakes. But if you can't beat these levels, then you haven't got enough basics down and it's gonna hurt the pocketbook even more by trying to jump up.

Great advice by Badbeat. I'd like to add something also.

It's very hard to pick a discipline and get good at it. It may very well be that you're going to be a better tournament player than a cash player. Or you might be a shark at the SNGs but not the MTTs or cash.

It seems to me that you've done pretty well at the MTTs and not so well at the SNGs or cash.

Each game demands different skill sets and disciplines and some players I know are great at SNGs but if they sit at a cash game, they're going to lose their buy-in. I also know players who are good at cash but do very poorly at SNGs.

I think you get the picture. It's very hard to learn and master the different styles it takes to win in cash, SNGs and MTTs.

You just have to build your BR in one game type and then use those profits to improve your game in the other game types.

Hope this helps...
