The Story

My goal is to make $1,000,000 playing poker.

I am the type of personality that generally accomplishes whatever I set my mind to, and I fully believe that even though it may take many years, I will make $1,000,000 playing poker. Originally, I figured this would be best accomplished through winning a tournament (World Poker Tour, World Series of Poker, etc.), but now I’m not sure whether this will be through a tournament, through grinding it out, or some combination of both.

I’ve played poker casually since I was a kid, but only recently learned how to play Texas Hold’em. I have been playing almost every day (or night) since Jan 2008.

One important note- as of this writing, all the ‘money’ I talk about is play money. Yes, that’s sort of lame, but I’m still learning here. Give me a break. I think that once I’ve placed in a tournament, or amassed over 1,000,000 in play money, then I’ll upgrade to real dollars. I’m sort of impatient so maybe it will happen before then. I’m sure I’ll let you all know.

Started playing for real money this weekend. Wish me Luck! (http://rounding.wordpress.com/2008/03/02/started-playing-for-real-money/)

Okay, so I have a confession to make.

I had thought you were talking about real money until just now when I read this. Hence my surprise at the fact that you risked your whole bankroll previously.

Still, sounds like you are doing very well with your playchip play and are on your way to playing real money in the near future

  3. I thought that might be the case!

Well, in case you didn’t catch it, I started playing real money games over the weekend.

    Wish me luck!

  4. Hey, how you doing?

I’m on a similar goal but $0 – $100,000 is my goal right now. Maybe $0-$1,000,000 for my lifetime goal:)

I’m at about $2400 or so. Wasn’t easy..many hours wasted but I like to play.

I was having a tough time on the 9-10 man sit and gos than I tried the 10 man heasup sit and gos. Have you tried those? Top 5 places double their money.

I think you should try some free bankrolls. Basically, pokerroom gives you $50 or whatever to play at their poker room and you must pay $50 or so in rake before you cashout. I have some listed on my blog if you’re interested.

Keep your blog updated:) And check out my blog http://geneyuss.blogspot.com/search/label/Poker%20Blog

  5. Thanks for the comment- it’s slow going. I’m down about $100 :-(

I feel like I’m still learning a lot though- much of it from my fellow bloggers: http://rounding.wordpress.com/2008/08/15/poker-thoughts/#comment-1168 :-)

Good luck to you sir. I have been playing for about 3 years, one year online. I could only make an estimate to how im doing, right now I would say I have just about broken even.

Initially I lost alot of money. About $200. Im a student, I have no job, so thats alot of money for me.

If I have one piece of advice to you, it is this: learn to fold. Looking back, I bemoaned my bad luck, but in reality I was paying off people who used the strategy of raising big when they had big.
In my experience of calling massive raises (i.e. raises of twice the pot or more) it was 1/3 bluffers and 2/3 monster hands who were risking getting no action for the occasional payoff. It hurts to fold with a good hand, and you may be certain that they’re bluffing, but at the end of the day theres no value in a huge call.

I believe anyone, with enough patience and concentration, can win money on online poker. The real question is, how much, and at what level. Just because you can make $20 a day playing 25/50c blinds, doesn’t mean you can make $200 playing 2.50/5. The standard gets higher as the stakes rise, naturally. $1m is a hell of alot of money. Perhaps a few hundred in the world have ever made that much. Does everyone have their limit? Maybe. Who knows. Keep blogging!( Im tempted to start my own now.)
